Ethan Fried Chief Academic Officer, DIO
Ethan D. Fried, MD, MS, MACP is a senior physician-educator and academic leader in internal medicine, pulmonary and critical care medicine, and graduate medical education. He has held major leadership roles at Northwell Health and Lenox Hill Hospital, including Professor of Medicine at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, Associate Designated Institutional Official at Lenox Hill Hospital, Internal Medicine Residency Program Director at Lenox Hill, and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Northwell Health.
His training includes a BA in Biomedical Science from City College of New York, an MD from SUNY Stony Brook, and Master’s degrees in Clinical Epidemiology (Harvard) and Health Professions Pedagogy and Leadership (Hofstra). Clinically, he completed internal medicine residency at SUNY Downstate and a pulmonary/critical care fellowship at Weill Cornell/New York Presbyterian, and he has maintained active leadership and attending roles across several New York institutions over decades.
His scholarship focuses on medical education, quality improvement, patient safety, and pulmonary circulation. He has authored peer-reviewed articles, invited publications, book chapters, abstracts, and educational curricula, with especially strong work in standardized patients, resident education, patient safety reporting, cultural competency, and quality improvement training.
Dr. Fried’s career is distinguished by extensive teaching innovation, national and regional lectures, and service in professional organizations. He is a Master of the American College of Physicians (MACP) and served as President of the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine (APDIM). He has also received multiple awards for teaching and leadership, reflecting a long-standing emphasis on improving resident education, faculty development, and patient-centered care.
